Overview
De Cameron Guest House is a no-frills budget stay on Tanah Rata's main road, directly opposite the bus and taxi station. Step off the coach from Kuala Lumpur or Penang and you're at the door in about a minute, which is a big help when you arrive with a rucksack after several hours of mountain bends.
You can choose between a twin and a double, both sharing bathrooms, and the Wi-Fi is free. It's an adults-only house, with no smoking or parties, so evenings are generally quiet despite the central position.
Highlights
- Across the road from the bus station
- Twins and doubles
- Shops and food stalls within walking distance
- Free Wi-Fi
- Adults-only, quiet house rules
Location
Tanah Rata is the main town of the Cameron Highlands and the easiest base without a car. The main street has Indian banana-leaf restaurants, Chinese steamboat places, bakeries and tour desks, and the local market is within walking distance.
Many of the highlands' sights are a short drive: Gunung Brinchang, the Bharat tea plantation and the boardwalk through the Mossy Forest are each roughly 15 minutes away by car. Half-day tours leave from Tanah Rata every morning and are an easy way to see several of them without arranging taxis.
Several of the numbered jungle trails also begin on the edge of town, including the walk past Robinson Falls, so you can be on a forest path within minutes of leaving the guesthouse.
Good to know
- Bathrooms are shared.
- Children can't stay, and smoking and parties aren't allowed.
- Nights in the highlands are cool, often dipping below 18°C, so pack a warm layer.
