Where to stay on Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc is Vietnam's largest island, in the Gulf of Thailand off the south-west coast. It's known for long sandy beaches, sunsets over the sea, seafood, pepper farms and the fish sauce that the island has produced for generations.

Over the past decade it has grown quickly, with big resorts, theme parks and a cable car in the south, while the main town, Duong Dong, keeps its busy market and fishing harbour. Where you stay makes a real difference, as the island is around 50 km from top to bottom.

Phu Quoc, area by area

Most visitors pick between the town, the west-coast beach strip, the developed south and the resort-filled north.

Duong Dong town

Best for value and the night market

Duong Dong is the island's main town, with the Dinh Cau rock temple at the harbour mouth, a lively night market and plenty of local restaurants. Hotels here are good value, and small beaches lie on either side of the river mouth.

Long Beach (Bai Truong)

Best for sunsets and beach holidays

Stretching south from Duong Dong along the west coast, Long Beach is the island's main beach strip, lined with hotels, bars and seafood restaurants that face west for the sunset. It's convenient for the airport and easy to get around.

An Thoi and the south

Best for the cable car and island trips

The southern tip is home to the port of An Thoi, the Hon Thom cable car out to the islands and the newly built Sunset Town with its evening shows. Boat trips for snorkelling around the An Thoi islands leave from here, and Sao Beach is on the east coast nearby.

Bai Dai and the north

Best for families and big resorts

The north-west coast around Bai Dai is lined with large resorts and home to the VinWonders theme park and the Vinpearl Safari. It's quieter in the evening and further from town, but popular with families.

Getting to and around Phu Quoc

Phu Quoc International Airport has flights from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and a growing number of international routes. Ferries also run from Rach Gia and Ha Tien on the mainland. Vietnam offers visa exemptions for some visitors arriving directly on the island; rules change, so check the current requirements before you travel.

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the easiest way to get around. Hiring a scooter is popular, but traffic is growing and you'll need a valid licence and insurance.

Things to do

Watch the sunset from Long Beach, take the cable car to Hon Thom island, and join a boat trip to snorkel around the An Thoi islands. Visit a pepper farm and one of the traditional fish sauce makers, and browse the Duong Dong night market for grilled seafood.

Families can spend a day at VinWonders or the safari park in the north, while the forested north-east, part of Phu Quoc National Park, has quieter beaches and waterfalls in the wet season.

When to go

The dry season, roughly November to April, has calm seas on the west coast and plenty of sunshine. From around May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rougher water on the west side, though there are still many sunny spells and lower prices.
