Location
Phousi is the hill in the middle of the old town, with a gilded stupa at the top and sunset views over the rivers.
The Royal Palace Museum, once the residence of Laos's kings, holds the Phra Bang, a revered gold Buddha image after which the city is named. Across the road, the steps up Phousi start, and the morning market is about five minutes' walk.
Wat Xieng Thong, built in the 16th century near the tip of the peninsula, is around 12 minutes on foot. Beyond the old town, Kuang Si Falls and the Pak Ou caves make good half-day trips, and the railway station for trains to Vientiane and China is about 20 minutes away.
