Hotels in Thailand

Most of the Thai places we list are on the islands: Koh Tao and Koh Phangan in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Chang near the Cambodian border, and Phuket and Krabi on the Andaman coast. Each destination has its own guide, with an area-by-area breakdown so you can compare places in the same part of an island.

The coasts have different weather patterns, so the best island for your trip often depends on when you're going.

Planning a trip to Thailand

Two coasts, two seasons

On the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi, Trang), the south-west monsoon usually brings the most rain from about May to October. The Gulf islands (Koh Tao, Koh Phangan) are generally driest from around January to August, with the heaviest rain from roughly October to December. Koh Chang, in the east, is usually wettest from around June to October.

Getting between destinations

Domestic flights link Bangkok with Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Surat Thani and Trat. Koh Tao and Koh Phangan are reached by ferry or catamaran from Chumphon, Surat Thani or Koh Samui, and Koh Chang by ferry from the Trat coast. Overnight trains and buses connect Bangkok with the south.
