The Sylvia

Overview

The Sylvia is in Solangon, San Juan, about 200 metres from Solangon Beach. It's a practical, homely base: there's a garden, a shared kitchen, Wi-Fi, a laundry service and free private parking, and some rooms accept pets, which is unusual on the island.

The shared kitchen makes it a good choice for longer stays or for travellers on a budget who'd rather cook some meals with fruit and fish from the local market. The rooms are non-smoking, according to partner listings.

Location

Solangon is one of San Juan's best-known sunset beaches, with cafés, dive shops and restaurants along the main road, so you can walk to dinner most nights.

Paliton Beach is a short ride along the coast, and Tubod's marine sanctuary is close for snorkelling. Free parking is useful if you hire a scooter, which is the easiest way to reach the waterfalls and old churches on the far side of the island.

For supplies, San Juan's small public market sells fruit, vegetables and fresh fish in the mornings, and there are sari-sari corner shops along the main road for water, snacks and basics. Most visitors find two or three nights enough to see the island, but a kitchen and a beach this close make it tempting to stay longer.
